If you or a loved one have an intellectual or developmental disability (ID/DD), you might have heard about Self-Direction, but aren’t quite sure what it means. Don’t worry-I’ll break it down in a simple, easy-to-understand way!
Self-Direction is a program through OPWDD (Office for People With Developmental Disabilities) in New York.
It allows people with ID/DD (and their families) to create a custom plan for services and supports, using a budget provided by Medicaid. Instead of relying on an agency to make decisions, you get to choose:
- What services you need (like support staff, classes, activities, or transportation);
- Who provides them (you can even hire people you trust);
- When and where services happen;
- How your budget is spent.
It’s all about flexibility and independence, ensuring your plan fits your life-not the other way around.
